One of the most overlooked yet powerful skills in the world is the ability to learn without permission.
I first encountered this mindset through my mentor, Fii Stephen, who made sure this lesson stayed in my subconscious.
Fii says learning without permission is the ability to learn about and beyond what anyone is willing, available, and capable to teach me.
With Those words in mind, I always remind myself that “If you p learn by when, what, and how someone teaches you, you will always be limited to only the things they know.”
This made true learning not just about classrooms, mentors, or structured training but the capacity to go above and beyond what anyone is willing, available, capable, or even interested in teaching you.
Even though we live in an age of information overload, paradoxically, we also live in an age of people struggling to learn unless the information is neatly packaged, handed over, and explained step by step.
Young people especially risk falling into this trap of waiting for permission instead of cultivating initiative for learning.
In my journey of activating my potential, the most crucial yet non-negotiable activity is the ability to learn without permission.
What Does “Learning Without Permission” Really Mean?
To “learn without permission” is to:
Take initiative when others are passive.
Search out knowledge when no one is offering it.
Experiment and explore without waiting for validation.
Practice self-discipline in pursuing mastery, even when no teacher is watching.
It’s the courage to say, “I don’t know this yet, but I can figure it out,” in cases such as:
An aspiring graphic designer using free design software and YouTube tutorials to sharpen their craft instead of waiting for someone to sponsor design school and a toolset.
A young entrepreneur reads marketing books, tests different strategies, and learns through trial and error instead of waiting for a business coach to appear.
A job seeker who learned coding or data analysis skills to position themselves for opportunities, even when their university didn’t cover those fields.
This is not an exhaustive list, but the very few you can emulate if you really want to activate your potential.
Why This Matters for Your Potential
Activating your potential will give you personal stability, meaning being balanced, adaptable, and grounded across different areas of life.
It will ties directly into your:
1. Mental & Emotional Stability
When challenges come, being able to self-learn makes you calmer and not break down waiting for solutions to be handed over.
Instead, you research, test, and grow stronger through self-discovery as you learn and do.
Example: If you're facing stress, you explore mindfulness, journaling, or breathing techniques on your own before ever needing to meet with a therapist.
2. Career & Skill Stability
We all agree that industries are changing too fast for schools or employers to catch up.
If you wait for structured training, you’ll always be behind Self-learners thrive because they can upskill in real time.
Quote: “Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune.” – Jim Rohn
3. Financial Stability
Wealth is often built by those who learn beyond the basics if you can pick up financial literacy, investing, and entrepreneurship without needing someone to teach you personally at first.
Example: Many successful entrepreneurs started by reading books and testing business ideas while others only talked about starting someday.
4. Self-Identity & Purpose
Learning without permission reveals your deeper interests in passions, skills, and values no teacher could point out for you.
Example: If you start reading history outside of school requirements, you may discover a love for research and build a career in policy or education.
How Learning Without Permission Drives Growth and Wealth
Growth
You grow when you act on your curiosity, not just the requirements.
If you only learn what you’re “supposed to” or have been “told to* learn, you remain average while diving into what others overlook expand you faster than your peers.
Wealth
The most valuable opportunities lie in areas not widely taught and by self-learning, you gain an edge and see opportunities where others see confusion.
Examples of “wealth through self-learning”:
A teenager learns coding through free courses and later builds a tech portfolio.
A hair stylist studies YouTube tutorials and Instagram trends, then attracts a loyal clientele with fresh, unique styles.
A small business owner who teaches themselves digital marketing and saves thousands in marketing costs while doubling their reach.
Why Do So Many People Miss Learning Without Permission?
The truth is, many people confuse learning with formal education and create dependencies by waiting for a:
Teacher to explain everything.
Mentor to guide every step.
Course to package information neatly.
Dependency is dangerous because it keeps you at the mercy of others’ knowledge, pace, and availability while as a self-learner, you become unstoppable because you:
Build confidence in your ability to figure things out.
Stay curious and adaptable.
Rarely feel “stuck” because you trust the process of discovery.
Implement how to start learning without permission
This isn’t about being reckless; it’s about taking ownership of your growth with this practical guide:
Follow your curiosity: Pick one subject you’ve always wanted to know more about and dive in.
Start with what’s free: Books, podcasts, YouTube, blogs, and online libraries are goldmines.
Set micro-challenges: Commit to learning one new word, tool, or technique daily according to your focus.
Document your progress: Keep a learning journal or portfolio to help you track your growth and build your confidence.
Test and apply: Don’t just consume knowledge, practice and produce with it at least once a week.

Ahead Ahead,
If you want to build personal stability, growth, and wealth, you cannot afford to wait for permission.
Teachers, mentors, and coaches are wonderful, but they should not be your only source of growth.
The most transformative lessons are the ones you chase down, struggle with, and claim for yourself.
Fii Stephen taught me this truth early in life, and it has been a compass ever since, and now, I pass it on to you.
Learn without permission, explore without waiting, and grow without limits.
Remember, the world doesn’t reward those who only learn what they’re told, it rewards those who can discover, adapt, and create beyond the boundaries of formal teaching.
